This Halloween, if you wouldn’t wear a Klan hood, don’t wear a MAGA hat.

That bright red hat is a symbol of racist hate and white supremacy.

The seasonal “What not to wear this Halloween” piece has become an annual tradition. Just last week, a costume company got in trouble (and rightly so) for selling kids an Anne Frank Halloween costume. At this point, hopefully, most thoughtful and considerate people know better than to show up at your party — or send your kid out ringing doorbells — wearing a Native American headdress, blackface (or brownface), a sombrero and serape, or anything else that reduces someone’s culture to a cheap stereotype for amusement. But I want to add another caveat for Halloween 2017:

Leave your bright red MAGA hat at home. Better yet, throw it in the trash, or light it on fire. Treat it however you would a Klan hood or a swastika armband, or any other symbol of hate. Just don’t wear it (or any lookalike hat) thinking it’s a hilarious Halloween parody. If you wouldn’t go out in a Klan hood, don’t go out in a MAGA hat.

Look, I know lots of well-meaning liberals are going to see Halloween as a chance to poke fun at the opposition party. Maybe you’ve already assembled a stained set of overalls, some tooth-black, and your bright red hat*. You and your friends might think it’s…
